Why hello there. [21 Aug 2008|10:29pm]

[ mood | amused ]

Thanks to a sudden spate of listings showing up in my friendslist, I was reminded that I was part of this comm and never got around to posting an introduction. So I guess I've just been a lurker for an inordinate amount of time. Heheh. Oh well.

1. Name: Sao

2. Birth date: Nov 5, 1989

3. First Poppy Book: Exquisite Corpse

4. Favorite Poppy Book: Tied between Drawing Blood and Exquisite Corpse. Depends on which one I've reread most recently.

5. Favorite Character (any works): Andrew Compton and Zachary Bosch. I will refuse to choose between those two.

6. First Encounter: A friend of mine (now girlfriend) was making everyone in our little friends circle read Exquisite Corpse. I was one of the few who really, really liked it. It was totally out of my sphere of experience. Therefore, I was also one of the only ones who came back asking for more, and received Drawing Blood in return. Proceeded to Lost Souls. From there... Well, I went out and had to buy my own. Discovered Wormwood in the bookstore and had to buy that. Girlfriend recently obtained Liquor and even more recently Prime, and I'm still waiting to read that one.

7. Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: I read Anne Rice so long ago, it's hard to do. I do know that while some might say they're in the same genre, they just feel so entirely different that I don't even really classify them the same. Their vampires are on the opposite ends of the spectrum of sexuality, though, which is the most interesting contrast, in my opinion.

8. What character reminds you of yourself the most: If I had to pick, it would probably be G-man from Liquor. He seems much more easygoing than any of the previous characters, which is my defining trait. I have compared my girlfriend and I to Jay and Andrew, though.

9. If you could ask her any question, what would it be: What is the secret to writing descriptive prose?

10. Do you look like Poppy: Umn. No.

11. Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: Not that I can bring to mind. I think I like it partially because it is so far out of my experience.

12. Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: Again, other than a simile using Jay and Andrew for my girlfriend and I, not really.

13. Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: Not really. I would like to visit New Orleans, though.

14. What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: Anything. I love it all and I will read it all. I loved the horror for the sheer gory brilliance of it, but I love her writing because it's beautiful.

RPers? [07 Jan 2007|05:04pm]

Hey everyone, I'm sorry if this isn't allowed, and the mod is free to take it down if it's not, but I wanted to ask if any of you would be interested in participating in a message board style roleplay as characters from Lost Souls. I've been playing Nothing on this particular board for a few months now, and we've just recently acquired a Ghost (someone I met through this community, actually). I'd love to see more characters from the novel get in on the action, especially Zillah, Steve, Christian, Molochai, Twig and Ann. And yes, I'm aware that Zillah, Christian, and Ann are supposed to be dead, but deceased characters are allowed as long as an explanation is provided for how they "came back from the dead."

Feel free to check it out and see if it's something you're interested in. You're welcome to ask me any questions here or via AIM - ForeverLast cXs.

link: Lestat's Savage Garden

Of course, if you like to RP but don't want to play one of Brite's characters, several other canons are available and currently in play as well. I play Anita Blake as well and am also looking for more Hamilton characters (the only other one taken thus far is Damian).

Questions! [29 Dec 2006|08:29pm]

[ mood | hopeful ]

I just recently read (and loved!) Lost Souls, and I have some questions...

1. It seems to be very hard / impossible to obtain the chapbooks and other Ghost & Steve shorts. Are they all collected somewhere? I am poor and can't afford to bid on them on Ebay, alas.

2. Is there a Lost Souls RP out there somewhere? I'm a roleplayer, and I'd love to be a part of a Lost Souls game.

3. Regarding the newer works of Poppy Z. Brite - which book does her new series start with? How many are there total?

I'm not sure if this is allowed, so feel free to delete it if it's not.

I play two Brite characters on two different RPG boards, and I'd love to see some more of her characters there as well. I'm also part of another board that doesn't have any of her characters there yet, but we'd love to see some, and if some people joined up as one of them, I'd take on another of her characters there as well.

The first board is Lune Eternelle. I play Zillah there. http://luneimmortelle.proboards37.com/index.cgi

The second is Lestat's Savage Garden. It's not very active, and we're in dire need of more members, so if you join any, please consider this one! I play Nothing here.

The third is the one that doesn't have any Brite characters yet, but like the other two, we accept original and canon characters, so check it out if you'd like. I'm an admin there and at LSG as well. Here I play Louis from the Vampire Chronicles and Tristan from myth and the movie Tristan + Isolde.

Thanks for your time and consideration! Like I said, if this isn't allowed, feel free to remove it...just a little harmless promotion. :)

[ mood | bouncy ]

2. birth...Aug 30

3.first book....lost souls(sigh)

4.favorite book... wow, exquisite corpse and or Are you Loathsome Tonight(swamp fetus)

5.Favorite character.... well they are all so well developed... but I will have to go with Trevor(DB) or Ghost(LS,AYLT,WW)

6.First encounter..... My neighbor tony gave me lost souls when i rejected his very needy advances back in 95'.... i read it in like one night and was hooked. Having since met poppy and lived in NOLA... i am and will always be greatful to her for producing her early horror/dark fantasy works.

7.Rice vs Brite....huh no contest.... Rice was good for me when i was like 16-19.... poppy was just the next level of greatness. Poppy is rich and full, powerful and raw.... Rice is wordy and over-rated... in my opinion that is.

8.how do I relate to..... well that's an easy one Ghost.... i long for a love like his and Steve's. That deep connection that only best friends share.... that and he's just so honest and true... no lies. I think he would sound a bit like Johnny Cash..... I lurv him.

9.ask her a question..... well I have many but now if I could I would ask why did you stop, really? She has told me it was that she was moving in a new direction and want's to depart from the stigma of horror writing.... I think it's the chef husband.

10.lookin like poppy...... well we have diferent genders and she has more hair.... maybe in my youthful- hardcore- goth- boy -drag- days just a bit.

11.Mirror of a book..... wow well somethings have been close to her discription, but never mirrored. IU relate to so much it's hard to pinpoint.

12.Do i know anyone like them.... well lots of folks.... the girl in DB is based on poppy herself and Ann of LS is very close to poppy's friend Catt(who owns a shop in the FQ of NOLA).... I have met bunches of people who fancied themselves as poppy characters.

13.Wishing on others things in the books.... well that would either mean i really hate them or love them dearly.... or both. No it have had me share of oddness in my life and will see more so... NO

14.What would i like to see poppy do..... Sell me the film rights to LOST SOULS. Her former agent says that it can be bought, but he needs some sort of production backing to even read my script.

you are the heart of this project... and I will see this made.
Strand productions is sort of interested, but not solid word yet....sigh

1. Name: Rachel (Rae)

2. Birth date: March 12

3. First Poppy Book: Exquisite Corpse

4. Favorite Poppy Book: its a tie between lost souls and drawing blood

5. Favorite Character (any works): i love all the characters but Zach from DB is probably my favorite

6. First Encounter: my friend Adam lent me his copy of exquisite corpse. up until then my two favorite authors had been, of course, King and Rice. i read this and my brain about fell out of my head. i was like, "this is the sickest, hottest shit i've ever read in my life...i want more!"

7. Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: Rice is good, but i cant read her now that ive discoverd poppy. i mean its like drinking tapwater, then getting your first taste of mountain spring and trying to go back on tap water...it just doesn't cut it.

8. What character reminds you of yourself the most: none of them really remind me of myself in a physical or mental sense, but i can identify with every single one of them, how they feel, think and interact with others around them. i see a little bit of myself in all of them i guess.

9. If you could ask her any question, what would it be: What author was/is most influential to you

10. Do you look like Poppy: No. if i were that hot i wouldn't be working in a shitty little pizza parlor.

11. Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: not that i can think of

12. Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: my friend Brian is kind of like the type of person you'd see hanging around the Yew. he's into vampires and weapons and stuff...he's evne got a Lost Souls Tavern sign on the wall in his room and he didn't even know who Poppy was until i told him. And my friend Dwayne is Kinsey. the way he's described in the book is definitely Dwayne. And my fiance would definitely be Steve.

13. Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: of course! i'd love to drive across the country in a beat up black van with five hot guys doing any drugs we could get, having all kinds of crazy bloody vampire sex. who wouldn't?!

14. What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: whatever she wants to write, i will read. i haven't read wormwood or her non horror book yet but i want to.

Poppy writes... "Faye S. Lewis thinks I have managed to "delete a goodly portion" of you ("you" being my readers) by being honest about what I write..."

If you happen to read this, and for what it's worth, you haven't alienated me. I love horror, I love what you've written in the past in the horror genre, but I can in no way fault you for moving away from it because that was your natural evolution as a writer. I have to confess when I first picked up your "non-horror" writing, I thought, "OK, let's see what she has to offer now", just as I did with Stephen King but, like his, I really, really enjoyed what you wrote and the fact that it was not in the horror genre didn't bother me a bit. Don't let people of small mind and limited vision get you down.

I read in your journal how you'd visited Chicago. I'm glad you had a good time. I was born and raised here and it's a great city. I was tempted to go to Trio's when you said you were going to dine there because I live nearby, but I thought it unseemly. You have enough fans tracking you and I didn't want to be put in the category (in your mind or my own) of the "obsessive fan".

I'm going to the French Quarter this coming weekend for a visit...am I crazy going so early? I've heard the Quarter's in pretty good shape and I thought it would be a safe bet at this point even though everything may not be reopened yet.

Posted at nextroundsonme and prime_liquor, sorry if you're seeing this for the third time.

If you sign up at this site (Oxygen), they'll donate a dollar to the Houston Children's Hospital.

The patients of the New Orleans Children’s Hospital have been evacuated to Houston in the aftermath one of the worst natural disasters in US history. Help raise money to assist these children and their families in this very difficult time.
... Oxygen will donate $1 for every person that joins.

I think it's a small effort that makes some kind of difference, so, if anyone wants to, here's the link.

6. I picked up Lost Souls while browsing in my local library waaaay back when... and really enjoyed it. Finished it in a day, then went back to the library to see what else there was by PZB... came away with Drawing Blood.... read it 3 or 4 times in as many days... and the rest, as they say, is history!

7. Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: hmmm... I've only read one or two of Anne Rice's books. They were enjoyable, but the writing style was.... *shrugs* not as good as PZB!

8. What character reminds you of yourself the most: it's odd... like a combination of Steve and Trev *shrugs*

new here [18 May 2005|10:37pm]

[ mood | bored ]

This community doesn't look very active but I figured I'd join anyway. Maybe I can at least make some new lj friends out of it. =)

1. Name: Crystal

2. Birthdate: August 2nd, 1986

3. First Poppy Book: Lost Souls

4. Favorite Poppy Book: Lost Souls

5. Favorite Character (any works): Zillah

6. First Encounter: I can't really recall how I discovered the book. I think it's as simple as me pulling it off of a shelf at Barnes and Noble and buying it because it looked good. I've always loved vampire novels so how could I resist?

7. Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: I don't think there's much to compare besides the fact Poppy has written some dark novels (including a vampire one) and so has Anne. To me, their writing styles are completely different. While I admire the work of both, I prefer Poppy's style because it flows so smoothly and her language use is exquisite.

8. What character reminds you of yourself the most: Nothing

9. If you could ask her any question, what would it be: Thinking realistically now, if a movie of Lost Souls were to be made, who would you like to see in the title roles? And yes, I'm already well aware of her previous answers to this question but if it were to be an all-white cast (which it should be, I believe, and I'm not racist, that's just how I imagine it), who would she choose?

10. Do you look like Poppy: No.

11. Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: Nothing's love for Zillah. I love just as strongly as he has, and I have felt that way about someone else many times in my life.

12. Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: Oh I definitely know a Zillah. It's funny though because he's so difficult and I really can't stand him yet Zillah is my favorite character in the books. Let's just say the fictional Zillah is much more charming than the one I know. =/ My friend isn't exactly like Zillah but he has a lot of the same characteristics minus a few, and with some of his own. I'm sure I also know other people who resemble characters out of the books. I definitely know a Christian.

13. Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: I wish I could find love like some of Poppy's characters have, or at least a companionship like Steve and Ghost have with each other. I have neither a best friend or a significant other.

14. What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: More horror, though that probably won't happen. Definitely more erotica.

the Lazarus Heart [01 May 2005|02:30pm]

Is the Crow: the Lazarus Heart (paperback edition) still in print and available in your country? I'm from overseas (Japan) I'm considering getting it online from J book store, but amazon jp says something equivalent to "currently out of stock", and some book store says "back order" while the other store says "unavailable" on their websites.

Thanks in advance:)
